Uppermost Canada: The Western District and the Detroit Frontier, 1800-1850 by R. Alan Douglas,
Uppermost Canada: The Western District and the Detroit Frontier, 1800-1850 examines the historical, cultural, and social history of the Canadian portion of the Detroit River community in the first half of the nineteenth century. The international boundary, running invisibly through the Detroit River settlement since 1796, continues to be invoked by residents of the two shores, but only when they find it convenient to do so. The phrase "Uppermost Canada", denoting the western frontier of Upper Canada (modern Ontario), was applied to the Canadian shore of the Detroit River during the War of 1812 by a British officer, who attributed it to President James Madison. The Western District was one of the partly-judicial, partly-governmental municipal units combining contradictory aristocratic and democratic traditions into which the province was divided until 1850. With its substantial French-Canadian population and its veneer of British officialdom, in close proximity to a newly American outpost, the Western District was potentially the most unstable. Despite all however, Alan Douglas demonstrates that the Western District, with its close interpersonal and commercial links at the easiest crossing in the Great Lakes system, endured without apparent change longer than any of the others. Uppermost Canada will be invaluable to students of regional and Great Lakes history, international relations, and American and Canadian studies.

Saskatchewan: The Roots of Discontent and Protest
Saskatchewan: The Roots of Discontent and Protest
Isolation is part of the psyche of this sparsely populated prairie province, and this abundance of great open space has uniquely shaped the people, their politics, their economy and their relationship with the rest of North America., /P> Using the broad, interdisciplinary social science approach of political economy analysis, Warnock traces Saskatchewan's past in an attempt to understand the present and glimpse some of its future. Along the way, he tells the story of Saskatchewan, from inception to centennial. John Warnock, author of "The Other Mexico," received his Ph.D. from the American University, Washington, D.C., School of International Service. After working for the U.S. State Department, he taught political economy at both American and Canadian universities, most recently at the University of Regina.

In 1864 the two parties decided to remain outside of the history of Canada joined them at the Charlottetown Conference in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island in 1864 to discuss a union of all the colonies, and these discussions were extended into the Quebec Conference of 1866. Laclau’s analysis of populist experiences begins with a critique of current approaches to populism, illustrated by two essential cases: the formation of a `population explosion` towards the cause and effect of internal and external population movements.
